Guest Speakers
This week in class we discussed a really cool topic known as VR and AR. Luckily we had two really amazing guest speakers that were able to help us understand how these realities work. Our first guest speaker was Jamie Donally. Jamie was a former math teacher and now she currently teaches others about technology. She has also recently become someone who is really interested in AR and VR. At first, she explained the difference between the two realities and then she talked to the class about how useful this technology is in the medical field and in education. Using this technology really lets you dive into your own world and get hands on opportunities with things you might need to learn in the future.

The other guest speaker we had was Chris Madsen. Chris is one of the people that work on the VR experience known as Engage. He brought us into the world of Engage and showed us all the content is holds. Watching him do a demonstration was really eye opening on all the possibilities there are in the world of VR. Engage was a whole other world and all it took to get there was putting on a headset and pressing a button. He was able to watch videos, walk around with life size animals, and even launch a rocket. There is infinite possibilities with the power of VR and Chris did a fantastic job on demonstrating just some of the things that can be accomplished with it.
Light, Bright, and Polite
In chapter 8 of
"Light, Bright, and Polite", Josh Ochs discusses how one would handle negative posts on social media that may be about them or their company. The author cannot stress enough that, no matter how careful you are about what you post or who you're posted with, people can always find away to attack you. One important thing to realize is that employers and people on social media can always find pictures that you have been posted in. This could be really good or really bad depending on the contents of the tagged photo. If you believe the photo doesn't properly represent the type of person you are and your brand, then you should definitely send that person a nice text message or email regarding your concerns. If you politely ask them to take the picture down, nine times out of ten they will do exactly what you ask. You always want to make sure that it doesn’t sound like you are trying to attack them in your message. The author explained that one way to check on your social media image is by googling your name and looking to see what pops up on the first three pages. The things that pop up are exactly the things that employers and other people will see when they search your name. Josh Ochs' message to everyone is that everyone needs to stay on top of their social media and make sure there are no outside factors that could possibly ruin your image.
Google Cardboard is a virtual reality device that is made from simple materials and lets you experience the basics of virtual reality. It has even been used in hospitals around the world to help the doctors analyze 3D models so that they don't have to use expensive equipment. Four years ago, a women named Bonny saw for the first time because of what Google was able to accomplish with their VR tool. Bonny had a rare disease that caused the cells in her retina to die and as a result, she was blind for 8 years. Then one day she got her hands on a headset and she was finally able to see for the first time in 8 years. The app on the headset was able to take live video feed from the world and transform it into an altered form so that Bonny was able to see what was going on. This magical moment is just some of the things that are to come in the future of VR gaming.
Archaeologists Take Advantage of AR
Something that really make AR different from VR is the ability the place your imagination in the real world.
Archaeologists have recently been using the power of AR to place historic buildings back into the real world so they can study what the environment was like back then. All they need to do is download an app and point their tablet at the area where they want the building to pop up and it appears out of thin air. Not only does the building pop up, it pops up with the real world in the background. You can have people walk by in the real world and they will show up on the tablet with the historic building you are studying. To take VR one step further, people are creating a device that allows you to smell the scene when you plop the historic building down. You'll be able to smell what the world was like back then without all the pollution in the world. Not only does this AR experience help archaeologists really dive deep into the past, it also helps them study the past and really grasp what the world was like before we existed. This is only the first step on the capabilities of AR and its advancing rapidly.

AR Making Surgery Safer
Some of the most technologically advanced tools in the medical field is imaging.
Doctors have been able to save millions of lives with all the different medical tools that have been invented. Now there is a new tool that is taking the world by storm. AR is giving doctors the ability to run through full surgeries and figure out what needs to be done under certain complications before those events happen. AR is allowing the doctors to pull out organs and different parts of the body to study them with certain diseases so that they know what to expect before even opening up the body. Doctors are successfully completing surgeries at a record pace and more efficiently using the AR tools. Not only does AR enable them to reduce errors in surgery but it also reduces the cost of operations and all the expensive tools they might use to to complete surgeries. Ultimately, AR is becoming aground breaking tool and doctors are taking full advantage of this tool in order. to save millions of lives.

App Smackdown
For the final app smackdown, I chose an app called
Police Scanner. The app is essentially a police scanner that allows you to listen to live feeds of the police radios. It isn't any old police scanner though, the app allows you to interact with individuals that are also using the app. You can also search anywhere in the world and listen in on the closest police feed. If you’re really into listening to the police scanner, they even add a list of the different police codes so that you can understand whats being said on the radio. The list of codes even changes based on where you go around the world because each country is different. Overall, the app is really simple to use and it allows you to keep up with what is going on in your neighborhood. If you’re interested in law enforcement, this app is definitely for you.
